Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your the ears or head that isnt caused by a third party source. There are many different problems that can cause tinnitus and sometimes it can occur for no known cause.

Mild tinnitus is usual, affecting about one in 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - noises can only be listened to by you. Its the most common type of tinnitus which is usually linked to problems affecting your seeing and hearing (auditory) system.

Goal tinnitus - noises can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens using a stethoscope placed in close proximity to your ear. This type of tinnitus is less frequent and is usually the result of a physical problem which produces sound in or near the ear. As an example, problems with narrowing of your own blood vessels.

Self-help

There are some simple things you can consider yourself that may help handle your symptoms of tinnitus and improve your standard of living.

  • Take regular exercise and take the time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of backdrop noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation seems, such as rain, the sea or bird song. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if youre using them at night and dont want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing damage.
