Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ears or head that isn�t caused by some other source. There are many different situations that can cause tinnitus and often it can occur for no known explanation.

Mild tinnitus is common, affecting about one in 10 people. There are 2 types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - appears to be can only be observed by you. It�s the most common type of tinnitus and is also usually linked to issues affecting your hearing (auditory) system.

Goal tinnitus - seems can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed around your ear. This sort of tinnitus is more uncommon and is usually the result of a physical problem that makes sound in or near the ear. For instance, problems with narrowing of your blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can try yourself that may help handle your symptoms of tinnitus and improve your quality of life.

  • Take physical exercise and make time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of background noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the ocean or bird song. If you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner, try an MP3 player with pillow speakers.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing problems.

Living with tinnitus

Tinnitus impacts people in different ways. Some individuals may find ways to effectively manage their symptoms. Unfortunately, others locate their lives are severely affected and they need a great deal of support.

You may find it frustrating and upsetting that people don't always understand how much impact the condition has on your general health.

It may be helpful to talk to other people who are affected by tinnitus. You can find support groups online (see our further information) or your GP are able to tell you about groups in your local area.
