Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ears or head that isn�t caused by an outside source. There are many different conditions that can cause tinnitus and quite often it can occur for no known purpose.

Mild tinnitus is normal, affecting about one out of 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be listened to by you. It�s the most typical type of tinnitus and is also usually linked to difficulties affecting your ability to hear (auditory) system.

Target tinnitus - appears to be can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens via a stethoscope placed in close proximity to your ear. This sort of tinnitus is less common and is usually the effect of a physical problem that creates sound in or near the ear. For example, problems with narrowing of your own blood vessels.

Self-help

There are a few simple things you can test yourself that may help control your symptoms of ringing in ears and improve your standard of living.

  • Take physical exercise and make time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of backdrop noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the ocean or bird song. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud disturbance, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing harm.

Living with tinnitus
