Tinnitus is the thought of sound in your ear or head that isn�t caused by some other source. There are many different circumstances that can cause tinnitus and quite often it can occur for no known purpose.
Mild tinnitus is usual, affecting about one out of 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.
Subjective tinnitus - seems can only be listened to by you. It�s the most frequent type of tinnitus and it is usually linked to problems affecting your listening to (auditory) system.
Objective tinnitus - seems can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed around your ear. This sort of tinnitus is less frequent and is usually the effect of a physical problem that makes sound in or near the ear. For instance, problems with narrowing of the blood vessels.
Self-help
There are several simple things you can attempt yourself that may help handle your symptoms of tinnitus and improve your total well being.
- Take regular exercise and make time to relax.
- Keep a low level of history noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
- Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the water or bird music. If you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner, try an MP3 player with pillow speakers.
- Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing damage.

Living with tinnitus
Tinnitus affects people in different ways. Many people may find ways to successfully manage their signs or symptoms. Unfortunately, others discover their lives are severely affected and they also need a great deal of support.

You can also alter your daily routine so that you're getting enough good quality sleep.
Having tinnitus can have a major effect on many aspects of your life including social interaction and relationships with your loved ones. People with tinnitus sometimes feel that other people believe they are exaggerating their symptoms because they don�t appear unwell. You may find it frustrating and upsetting that people don't always understand how much impact the condition has on your general health.
It may be helpful to talk to other people who are affected by tinnitus. You can find support groups online (see our further information) or your GP are able to tell you about groups in your local area.
