Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ear or head that isn�t caused by an outside source. There are many different problems that can cause tinnitus and in some cases it can occur for no known reason.

Mild tinnitus is normal, affecting about one in 10 people. There are 2 types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be noticed by you. It�s the most typical type of tinnitus which is usually linked to problems affecting your listening to (auditory) system.

Target tinnitus - seems can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens using a stethoscope placed around your ear. This kind of tinnitus is more uncommon and is usually caused by a physical problem that makes sound in or near the ear. For example, problems with narrowing of your own blood vessels.

Self-help

There are a few simple things you can test yourself that may help control your symptoms of tinnitus and improve your total well being.

  • Take regular exercise and make time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of history noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the sea or bird tune. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing problems.

Living with tinnitus
