Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your the ears or head that isn�t caused by an outside source. There are many different problems that can cause tinnitus and sometimes it can occur for no known cause.
Mild tinnitus is usual, affecting about one out of 10 people. There are 2 types of tinnitus.
Subjective tinnitus - seems can only be listened to by you. It�s the most common type of tinnitus and is usually linked to issues affecting your ability to hear (auditory) system.
Purpose tinnitus - appears to be can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed around your ear. This sort of tinnitus is less common and is usually the effect of a physical problem that creates sound in or near the ear. As an example, problems with narrowing of your own blood vessels.
Self-help
There are a few simple things you can try yourself that may help control your symptoms of ringing in ears and improve your way of life.
- Take frequent exercise and make time to relax.
- Keep a low level of backdrop noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
- Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the water or bird music. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
- Reducing your exposure to loud sound, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing harm.

Living with tinnitus
Tinnitus affects people in different ways. A lot of people may find ways to properly manage their symptoms. Unfortunately, others find their lives are severely affected plus they need a great deal of assistance.

People with tinnitus sometimes feel that other people believe they are exaggerating their symptoms because they don�t appear unwell. You may find it frustrating and upsetting that people don't always understand how much impact the condition has on your general health.
It may be helpful to talk to other people who are affected by tinnitus. You can find support groups online (see our further information) or your GP may be able to tell you about groups in your local area.
