Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ear or head that isnt caused by an outside source. There are many different problems that can cause tinnitus and quite often it can occur for no known purpose.

Mild tinnitus is normal, affecting about one out of 10 people. There are 2 types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - seems can only be noticed by you. Its the most frequent type of tinnitus and is usually linked to problems affecting your listening to (auditory) system.

Target tinnitus - sounds can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed around your ear. This sort of tinnitus is more uncommon and is usually the effect of a physical problem that produces sound in or near the ear. For example, problems with narrowing of your blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can test yourself that may help handle your symptoms of ringing in the ears and improve your quality of life.

  • Take physical exercise and take the time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of track record noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation noises, such as rain, the sea or bird tune. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if youre using them at night and dont want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noises, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing harm.
