Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your the ears or head that isn�t caused by some other source. There are many different circumstances that can cause tinnitus and often it can occur for no known cause.

Mild tinnitus is common, affecting about one in 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be noticed by you. It�s the most common type of tinnitus and it is usually linked to issues affecting your hearing (auditory) system.

Goal tinnitus - appears to be can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed around your ear. This particular tinnitus is less common and is usually the consequence of physical problem that produces sound in or near the ear. By way of example, problems with narrowing of your own blood vessels.

Self-help

There are a few simple things you can test yourself that may help control your symptoms of ringing in ears and improve your way of life.

  • Take regular exercise and take the time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of backdrop noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation noises, such as rain, the water or bird track. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing problems.

Living with tinnitus
