Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ear or head that isnt caused by a third party source. There are many different situations that can cause tinnitus and sometimes it can occur for no known explanation.

Mild tinnitus is common, affecting about one in 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be heard by you. Its the most frequent type of tinnitus and it is usually linked to problems affecting your hearing (auditory) system.

Goal tinnitus - noises can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed in close proximity to your ear. This particular tinnitus is less frequent and is usually caused by a physical problem that makes sound in or near the ear. For example, problems with narrowing of the blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can test yourself that may help manage your symptoms of tinnitus and improve your way of life.

  • Take frequent exercise and take the time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of track record noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the ocean or bird track. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if youre using them at night and dont want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud disturbance, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing damage.

Living with tinnitus

Tinnitus influences people in different ways. A lot of people may find ways to successfully manage their signs or symptoms. Unfortunately, others discover their lives are severely affected plus they need a great deal of support.

There are lifestyle changes you could make to help you tolerate tinnitus. These include obtaining the balance right in between your levels of rest and activity, using treatment programmes such as CBT or tinnitus retraining. You can also alter your daily routine so that you're getting enough good quality sleep.

Having tinnitus can have a major effect on many aspects of your life including social interaction and relationships with your loved ones. People with tinnitus sometimes feel that other people believe they are exaggerating their symptoms because they dont appear unwell. You may find it frustrating and upsetting that people don't always understand how much impact the condition has on your general health.

It may be helpful to talk to other people who are affected by tinnitus. You can find support groups online (see our further information) or your GP can tell you about groups in your local area.
