Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the thought of sound in your ear or head that isn�t caused by a third party source. There are many different conditions that can cause tinnitus and often it can occur for no known cause.

Mild tinnitus is normal, affecting about one in 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - appears to be can only be heard by you. It�s the most prevalent type of tinnitus and is also usually linked to problems affecting your hearing (auditory) system.

Target tinnitus - sounds can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens using a stethoscope placed near your ear. This particular tinnitus is less frequent and is usually the consequence of physical problem which produces sound in or near the ear. For instance, problems with narrowing of the blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can test yourself that may help manage your symptoms of ringing in the ears and improve your total well being.

  • Take frequent exercise and take the time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of history noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the sea or bird music. If you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner, try an MP3 player with pillow speakers.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noises, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing harm.

Living with tinnitus

Tinnitus influences people in different ways. Some people may find ways to efficiently manage their signs or symptoms. Unfortunately, others discover their lives are severely affected and they need a great deal of support.

People with tinnitus sometimes feel that other people believe they are exaggerating their symptoms because they don�t appear unwell. You may find it frustrating and upsetting that people don't always understand how much impact the condition has on your general health.

It may be helpful to talk to other people who are affected by tinnitus. You can find support groups online (see our further information) or your GP are able to tell you about groups where you live.
