Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the thought of sound in your ear or head that isn�t caused by some other source. There are many different situations that can cause tinnitus and in some cases it can occur for no known reason.

Mild tinnitus is typical, affecting about one out of 10 people. There are 2 types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be observed by you. It�s the most prevalent type of tinnitus and is usually linked to problems affecting your seeing and hearing (auditory) system.

Goal tinnitus - appears to be can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens via a stethoscope placed near your ear. This kind of tinnitus is more uncommon and is usually the result of a physical problem that produces sound in or near the ear. As an example, problems with narrowing of your blood vessels.

Self-help

There are some simple things you can test yourself that may help manage your symptoms of ringing in the ears and improve your standard of living.

  • Take regular exercise and take the time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of track record noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation noises, such as rain, the water or bird music. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud disturbance, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing injury.

Living with tinnitus

Tinnitus affects people in different ways. Some people may find ways to properly manage their signs. Unfortunately, others find their lives are severely affected and they need a great deal of assist.
