Tinnitus is the thought of sound in your the ears or head that isn�t caused by an outside source. There are many different problems that can cause tinnitus and quite often it can occur for no known cause.
Mild tinnitus is typical, affecting about one in 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.
Subjective tinnitus - seems can only be observed by you. It�s the most frequent type of tinnitus which is usually linked to difficulties affecting your ability to hear (auditory) system.
Objective tinnitus - seems can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed near your ear. This particular tinnitus is less common and is usually caused by a physical problem that produces sound in or near the ear. By way of example, problems with narrowing of your blood vessels.
Self-help
There are some simple things you can attempt yourself that may help control your symptoms of tinnitus and improve your standard of living.
- Take frequent exercise and make time to relax.
- Keep a low level of background noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
- Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the sea or bird music. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
- Reducing your exposure to loud disturbance, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing problems.

Living with tinnitus
