Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ear or head that isnt caused by an outside source. There are many different situations that can cause tinnitus and sometimes it can occur for no known explanation.

Mild tinnitus is common, affecting about one in 10 people. The two main types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be heard by you. Its the most typical type of tinnitus which is usually linked to problems affecting your seeing and hearing (auditory) system.

Target tinnitus - seems can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens through a stethoscope placed in close proximity to your ear. This kind of tinnitus is less frequent and is usually caused by a physical problem which produces sound in or near the ear. For example, problems with narrowing of your respective blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can try yourself that may help manage your symptoms of ringing in the ears and improve your way of life.

  • Take regular exercise and make time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of track record noise, such as an opened window, a follower or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation sounds, such as rain, the sea or bird music. If youre using them at night and dont want to disturb your partner, try an MP3 player with pillow speakers.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud disturbance, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing damage.

Living with tinnitus

Tinnitus affects people in different ways. Some individuals may find ways to effectively manage their signs and symptoms. Unfortunately, others find their lives are severely affected and they need a great deal of help.

There are lifestyle changes that you can make to help you deal with tinnitus. These include receiving the balance right between levels of activity and rest, using treatment programmes such as CBT or tinnitus retraining. You can also alter your daily routine so that you're getting enough good quality sleep.

Having tinnitus can have a major effect on many aspects of your life including social relationships and interaction with your loved ones. People with tinnitus sometimes feel that other people believe they are exaggerating their symptoms because they dont appear unwell. You may find it frustrating and upsetting that people don't always understand how much impact the condition has on your general health.

It may be helpful to talk to other people who are affected by tinnitus. You can find support groups online (see our further information) or your GP can tell you about groups in your local area.
