Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ears or head that isn�t caused by an outside source. There are many different circumstances that can cause tinnitus and sometimes it can occur for no known explanation.

Mild tinnitus is common, affecting about one out of 10 people. There are 2 types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - seems can only be listened to by you. It�s the most frequent type of tinnitus and is also usually linked to issues affecting your ability to hear (auditory) system.

Purpose tinnitus - sounds can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens using a stethoscope placed near your ear. This particular tinnitus is more uncommon and is usually the result of a physical problem that produces sound in or near the ear. For example, problems with narrowing of your respective blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can consider yourself that may help deal with your symptoms of ringing in the ears and improve your quality of life.

  • Take frequent exercise and make time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of backdrop noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation appears to be, such as rain, the water or bird tune. If you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner, try an MP3 player with pillow speakers.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing harm.

Living with tinnitus
