Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your ears or head that isn�t caused by a third party source. There are many different situations that can cause tinnitus and sometimes it can occur for no known cause.

Mild tinnitus is common, affecting about one in 10 people. There are two types of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus - sounds can only be observed by you. It�s the most typical type of tinnitus and is also usually linked to issues affecting your ability to hear (auditory) system.

Goal tinnitus - noises can be heard by you or your GP when he or she listens using a stethoscope placed in close proximity to your ear. This sort of tinnitus is more uncommon and is usually the result of a physical problem that makes sound in or near the ear. For instance, problems with narrowing of the blood vessels.

Self-help

There are many simple things you can consider yourself that may help control your symptoms of ringing in ears and improve your total well being.

  • Take frequent exercise and make time to relax.
  • Keep a low level of track record noise, such as an opened window, a fan or leave the radio on.
  • Listen to recorded relaxation noises, such as rain, the ocean or bird tune. Try an MP3 player with pillow speakers if you�re using them at night and don�t want to disturb your partner.
  • Reducing your exposure to loud noise, as this can make your tinnitus worse and may lead to hearing injury.

Living with tinnitus
